1. The workshop

The IAEA-TM on ECRH Physics and Technology for ITER provides a forum for open discussion on the most recent experimental achievements both in technology and physics, worldwide, and the implications for the ITER system design. TMs are organized under the guidance of IAEA by a local host, which in this case is IFP/CNR, Milano.
The 2005 event is a follow-up of previous meetings on ECRH in Oarai, Japan, held in 1999, and on ECRH on ITER in Kloster Seeon, Germany, held in 2003. It aims at integration of the many applications and studies and developments performed worldwide on ECRH physics and technology,  ITER oriented. The main applications of the ITER ECRH system are:

·  plasma initiation and current ramp-up control

·  core heating to burning conditions

·  current drive in the plasma core and off-axis

·  control of MHD instabilities such as sawteeth and NTMs.

Starting from the experimental achievements both in technology and physics,  and taking advantage of the powerful computing tools available, the finalization of an ITER system design should be a focus of discussion.

Five oral and plenary sessions are scheduled. Sessions, and suggested focus, are:

A: Gyrotron development towards ITER needs: power per unit, frequency tunability
B: Transmission systems/Launchers: state of the art, remote and front steering, long term reliability.

C: System integration: towards unified solutions for different applications

D: Applications of ECRH/ECCD: MHD stability, profile control, active control techniques

E: ECRH wave physics: state of the art and perspectives of wave/plasma modelling

All contributions will be collected on a CD-ROM and made available on the web. Papers will be published on Journal of Physics, Conference Series.

A forum for open discussions on the mission of ECH/ECCD in ITER is set in the late Monday and Tuesday afternoon.

The meeting will be followed by the ITER ITPA Topical Group on Steady State Operation and Enhanced Performance meeting, May 5-6. A joint session in day  May 4 will provide an opportunity for the participants to exchange ideas between the two groups.

2. Location

The “Societa del Casino” was established in1821 as a private club supporting social and cultural initiatives. Since then it has been a discreet witness of most important historical and cultural events in Como, a charming town on the homonymous lake 50 km north to Milano. It is hosted in luxurious halls in the Town Civic Theatre. In addition to the main hall, rooms are available for informal meetings.

Lunches will be served at the club, whose comfortable rooms are available to all participants during the meeting days.  Accommodation will be available in hotels within walking distance, in the pedestrian precinct downtown. Como can be easily reached from Milano by trains leaving Central Station and Nord Station. Malpensa and Linate airports are connected to both Stations as well. Note that, as usual for IAEA TMs, there is no registration fee, but € 21.5 per day will have to be paid for lunches.

4. Abstract and paper

Those who are interested in participating at the TM and want to give a presentation of their work are requested to send before January 31, 2005, a one-page abstract by e-mail to:

iaeatm@ifp.cnr.it

The format can be either Microsoft Word, postscript, or pdf.

PLEASE NOTE THAT, BECAUSE IT IS AN IAEA WORKSHOP, YOU ALSO HAVE TO FILL IN A PARTICIPATION FORM FORM AND SEND IT TO IAEA, VIENNA. FOR THIS READ THE SECTION ON IAEA FORMALITIES.

Confirmation of acceptance of the abstract will be given by February 25, 2005. Authors of accepted contributions will be asked to deliver a paper at the workshop.

Abstracts and presentations will be available on the web. Publishing on-line in Journal of Physics: Conference Series is being agreed with IOP.

The paper should therefore be prepared accordingly to “instruction for authors” which can be found in http://www.iop.org/EJ/authors/-page=authinfo/1742-6596/1

6. IAEA Formalities for TM Participants

A participant will be accepted only if the Participation Form A is transmitted through the appropriate Governmental representative authority. Please also send a completed Author Form B (PDF) with the abstract of your presentation to your appropriate authority (Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Atomic Energy Authority) for subsequent transmission to the IAEA.

The Participation Forms and abstracts must be received by 31 January , 2005. Please send an additional copy of the Author Form B and abstract by e-mail or fax directly to the IAEA Scientific Secretary.

7. Expenditures and financial Support

The costs for the organization of the meeting are borne by the host organization and the IAEA.  No registration fee will be charged to participants. As a general rule, the IAEA does not pay the cost for attendance to the meeting (i.e. travel and living expenses) of participants.  However, limited funds are available to help meet the cost of attendance and participation of a few selected specialists mainly from developing countries with low economic resources.  Generally, not more than one grant will be awarded to any one country.  The grants awarded will be in the form of lump sums usually covering part of the cost of attendance.
If governments wish to apply for a grant on behalf of one of their specialists, they should address specific requests to the IAEA Scientific Secretary at the International Atomic Energy Agency to this effect.  Governments should ensure that applications for grants:

a) are received by the IAEA by 7 March 2005 and

b) are accompanied by a duly completed and signed Author Form B and Grant Form C including the abstract of the paper to be presented.

c) an estimate of a valid travel agent of the flight costs from/to the nearest city or capital in their country and the conference location is included.

Applications that do not comply with the conditions mentioned above cannot be considered.  Awards will be announced around 20 March 2005.
For advance notice, please address inquiries by e-mail or FAX to the IAEA Scientific Secretary:

10. Accommodation

The Centro di Cultura Scientifica “Alessandro Volta” will take care of all logistics and organization details. Participants are therefore kindly asked to fill up the hotel reservation form, and to send it to “Centro Volta”. Participants may also contact chiara.stefanetti@centrovolta.it for any question they might have on their stay in Como.

The dowloadable Hotel reservation form has been slightly modified. The cost for attending both IAEA-TM and ITPA-SSO meetings, which covers meals served at the workshop, has been corrected. Those who have already made the reservation will be charged for the correct (lower) amount

The use of public transportation to get Como from Milano downtown, and from Milano airports (Malpensa, Linate, Bergamo), is quite convenient.  For those who wish to come by cars (private or rental), please remember that parking in Como downtown is very restricted and difficult. Be sure with your Hotel that a private parking is available.
